Christmas lights event

There were big crowds gathered at River Green to see Father Christmas and his helpers turn on the Christmas lights on 17 November. For the first time a stage was erected near the Christmas Tree to enable everyone to have a view as Santa pushed the plunger to light up the heart of Thorpe St Andrew. Radio Norwich and their mascot Norrie the Dog were on hand to help out and took lots of photographs including this one of Father Christmas, Town Mayor John Ward, Norrie and Deputy Mayor Ian Mackie.

If you have some pictures of the event that we could publish here please email them to HERE. The evening was rounded off by a splendid firework display - click here to see a short clip of part of it.

Thorpe History Group archives passed to the council

Archive material collected over the past fifty years by Janet Smith who led the group has been passed over to the Town Council for safekeeping. The archives have been indexed by Mr Russell James and it is intended to make them available to the public in due course. Meanwhile you can see the summary of the archive contents by clicking here.

There is a vast amount of material and it is hoped that some will be made available on line where appropriate. Some residents have subsequently contacted the Town Council to provide additional historic information to augment the collection. If anyone is interested in reforming a history group please contact the Town Council office.

The picture below is an early photograph of The Rushcutters when it was called Thorpe Gardens. Note steam  powered paddle boat moored outside, a very unusual craft - does anyone know anything more about this particular boat?

Energy saving heating at Fitzmaurice Pavilion

The Fitzmaurice Pavilion at Dussindale Park recreation ground, Pound Lane has been installed with solar water heating for the showers and toilets and two low energy air source heat pumps that can be used to heat or cool the building.

The equipment has been installed with £11,800 of grant assistance from Broadland District Council to replace the night storage heaters that previously heated the building. It is anticipated that the £5000 a year cost of electricity consumed in the building will be dramatically reduced by the new installations.

The pavilion is home to Thorpe Pavilion nursery who has sessions for pre school children every weekday during term time. As well as being used extensively by Thorpe Rovers football club and a number of cricket clubs the building is used for church meetings, band practice, dog training classes and holiday activities organised by Broadland District Council Tots to Teens leisure scheme. Telecom mast proposal

Telecom operators Vodafone and O2 have approached the Town Council to ask if it would be agreeable to a telecom mast being erected in the Laundry Lane Recreation Ground car park midway between the entrance gate and the entrance gate to the bowls club.

The mast would be similar in appearance to a telegraph pole and full details of the proposal can be seen by clicking here. The proposed mast would accomodate the two operators and provide an annual income to the Town Council of £4000 - £5000 whilst it was in use.

The mast is needed to meet demand for for 3g telecom services in the area. If the location at the Recreation Ground does not proceed the mast would be erected on the footpath in nearby roads such as St Catherines Road and South Hill Road.
